Map Test and Student Connect

You may have also seen this in the last email.  I am doing both until I know parents are signed up for the blog.

Hello EdVenture Parents,
We took the MAP test for mathematics today.   I was impressed with the students focus and desire to do a good job.  This test is a computer based test given to all middle school students in the fall and spring.  The test is designed to give problems at the student’s level.  If a student gets a problem correct they will get a higher level question the next time.  If this is correct the student gets a higher level question and so on.  Eventually the computer narrows in on the range of difficulty for each question.  In the end, each student should get roughly the same percentage of problems correct and incorrect.  This allows the test to be valid for students that are way above grade level expectations and students that are below grade level expectations.
I also gave each student a login and password for “Student Connect.”  Each student should have a full page handout with instructions.  This will allow students to see how they are doing in each class.  I would encourage you to get on with your child and help them make sense of the information.  The most useful tab is “assignments.”  It is helpful to click on “show all assignments” so you can see the entire semester to date.  If a student is missing an assignment it does NOT affect the grade seen on Zangle, but they are required to complete the assignment or assessment.  I would prefer that students learn to take the initiative to complete these assignments before I send letters/emails home.  If assignments are still incomplete by this Friday a note will be coming home and students will be expected to come to school early to complete.
Students are also able to retake any assessment if they want a higher score.  The expectation is that students come in for additional instruction and practice.  This can happen before school, after school or at lunch.  I require all students with scores below a three (at standard) to come in for additional instruction and practice.  Notes will come home soon if your child has assessment scores below a three.
I hope this helps.  Please let me know if you have questions.
